What Is Neuropsychology and How Can It Help You?

The study of brain-behavior interactions is known as neuropsychology. Clinical neuropsychologists use this expertise to analyze, diagnose, and treat patients suffering from neurological, psychiatric, or other medical problems. Neuropsychologists collect a variety of data on each patient, including a complete medical history and cognitive and behavioral tests. This information is gathered by a review of previous medical records, an interview session with the patient and family, and a direct examination of the patient. Other approaches, such as brain imaging or a thorough neurological examination, may not reveal findings established during a neuropsychological evaluation. A neuropsychological evaluation can provide valuable information that can assist the patient and family in better coping with current behaviors and symptoms.

Patients are frequently recommended for neuropsychological evaluation by other medical professionals, including neurologists, psychiatrists, psychologists, and primary care physicians, or they may self-refer.

Who Should Ask For a Neuropsychological Evaluation?

A neuropsychological evaluation should be considered if you respond “yes” to any of the following questions:

  • Have you seen any changes in your memory or other cognitive abilities, or are you concerned about them?
  • Is there a change in your capacity to execute duties at home or at work, or are you concerned about it?
  • Is there a shift or cause for concern in your behavior that has an impact on your relationships or daily life?

  • Are you taking any medications that could help or hurt your cognitive or behavioral functioning?

  • Has a neuropsychological evaluation been advised by another medical professional?

  • Is there a personality change you noticed?

Neuropsychology can be useful in a variety of situations. If you’d like to learn more about this service, please contact our office directly.
