What is Mild Cognitive Impairment?

Mild cognitive impairment (MCI) is a stage in the progression from normal age-related cognitive decline to dementia. People with MCI are informed of their cognitive impairment and can function independently on a daily basis. Among the signs and symptoms are:

  • Overwhelmed by the planning or decision-making process

  • Having a habit of forgetting things, or neglecting critical/essential things

  • Inadequate judgement and impulsiveness

  • Losing connection/course of thoughts

  • Having difficulty navigating familiar locations

MCI can be caused by a variety of reasons, including:

  • Alzheimer’s disease

  • Enlargement of the brain’s ventricles, which are fluid-filled spaces

  • Reduced reliance on glucose for energy in the brain

  • The hippocampus, a memory-enhancing part of the brain, is shrinking

  • Illnesses such as mental and neurological disorders

  • Medications
